I have Apache/MySQL/PHP on Windows XP.

I want my PHP files to behave in my computer like in web host.

I open a PHP file with FF and its content is printed!

I have recently been intrested in making a good website and I’ve been searching for good web hosting services. So I was wondering what would be a good option?

Considerations:
Windows XP compatible
no advertisements
get a *.com domain
cheap!
Microsoft Frontpage extention support
CGI script support

Thank you for you feedback, it will really help be find the proper services I require. :)

I am setting up a web page on my home PC running windows xp pro and the built-in IIS server or apache http server. I have to use port 8080 (http alternate) as my ISP told me that they block port 80. I have the web server listening on 8080 and router setup for port forwarding to my PC on 8080 as well. Everyone can see my pages with no problem from the outside (Internet or WAN) but when I type in my web site address from the same computer (web server) I am unable to view my web site. The error I get is "cannot find server" "The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings."
I can get to my site if I use http://localhost:8080 but I want to be able to use my internet name… Thanks in advance..
I have tried adding several entries in my HOSTS file but none seems to work.
I am using DDNS with www.no-ip.com. I also have their system giving me a redirect to port 8080 so that noone has to enter the port number at the end of the internet name. It all works fine from the outside but nothing from the my actual PC (web server)..
If I connect my PC directly to my cable modem so that the IP address is assigned to my network card, it all works the way it should (LAN & WAN). Behind the router is when it does not work. I have also had the ISP remove the MAC address so that it can be assigned newly to my router or my PC nic but no difference.

I downloaded Sun virtual box on my computer and I’m going to install windows xp as a guest os and run apache web server on it. Should I install a virus scanner in that os? My host os is windows 7 professional and I have McAfee virus scanner on it.

I wanted to host my website in my computer, can any one help me in telling step by step procedure to host my website in Windows XP with apache as webserver
Yes I have Static IP

I have my own computer with PHP, MySQL, Apache, Filezilla, and Mercury installed and it works fine. I already have a website at a remote hosting site and it works great except it is a shared server and often very slow. I wanted to move all of my website that uses PHP, MySQL and Apache to my own computer because 1 I get a ton more space, 2 I barely use it, and 3 there is a local computer store in town that I think would be able to provide the internet and DNS-stuff for my computer. I want to know what the requirements are. I have Windows XP, 256 MB of RAM, 1 55 GB and 1 8 GB harddrive, and 1.3 GHz (i think). I mainly want to put it on my computer because I can do anything with it, including mail which i couldn’t use with the other and plenty of other things.
Edit: The harddrives are actually (one) 55 GB hard drive and (one) 8 GB hard drive, with a total of 63 GB. I think I have an extra 128 MB or RAM, or maybe even 256 MB, so I think I’m ok or close in that area. I am not hosting the server at my house, there is a PC store and I am probably going to have my server there with them providing the Internet. I know Linux is better, and I am probably going to get their help in installing Linux soon.

1 I started learning HTML (awesome and pretty easy to get started)

2 then after two years I found that css is the newer way to go (easier to have a single style on multiple pages at once, no table-based).

3 then, this summer I learned that there is PHP. I felt that this will make things even better because I can use this instead of iframes (which is old) and even read/edit text files.

For the past few weeks I used php on a web hosting site but it gets really annoying having to upload every time I change code. But whenever I look around the web about php, I see advices about installing Apache too. I went to Apache website but I didn’t understand all the geek-words. I don’t want to make my computer a server. I just want to use php on my windows xp. How? Will installing php from the php website just do it? I don’t want to unintentionally open my computer to the world and/or have problems/viruses/extreme-slow-down on my computer.
Rather than just get everything with xampp, will installing just php do it?
…or actually xampp might be good since i found that "Officially, XAMPP’s designers intended it for use only as a development tool, to allow website designers and programmers to test their work on their own computers without any access to the Internet"

I wanted to host my website in my computer, can any one help me in telling step by step procedure to host my website in Windows XP with apache as webserver, I have a static IP

i have apache 2.2.3 running on my pc running windows xp. i have tested my website by going to http://localhost/ and it work. i have configured my router to forward port 80 to my ip address. then i have tried http://"myipaddress"/ and my website isn’t coming up. is there something that i’m missing or am i just plain stupid

I have windows XP serv pack2, installed Apache, put my index.html page in the appropraite directory, and when I go to http://localhost, or 127.0.01, or even my IP address (192.x.yz.) I can see the page, so I am thinking the apache is fine.

Problem: It can’t be seen from outside world.
I went to windows firewall and created an exception manually (to open port 80), and also on advanced tab, I chose my local area network and went to setting and clicked the HTTP server too, but still no luck:(
I know there is a whole different discussion about static or Dynamic IP, but at this point I am not even concerned about the NAME of the website, just as long as it can be seen even by putting the IP address in (my own IP is 192.x.y.z)

By the way, I have only one computer (I use clickwire modem, and there is only one computer that I connect to this modem).

Please help

Thanks,
Bob
