Hi everyone,

I have two questions for all of you.

First, what do you guys think is the best overall IDE? I like writing Java, XHTML, PHP, Javascript, CSS, C++, JSP, etc.. I would prefer if it had the Java and C++ compilers built-in as tools if possible. It would also be nice if it had syntax hilighting for all of the above.

Second, what do you think is the best web hosting company for a developer (not a designer) for things like Tomcat, Apache, phpMyAdmin, and stuff like that?

This started happening when my brother downloaded apache. I went to the control panel and removed the program but still cannot access the websites. How can I fix this? 10 points for whoever helps me!
This isn’t something that just happened. It’s been going on for three weeks.

My web hosting company supports mod_rewrite. I tried using this snippet:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule /([a-z0-9_-]*)\.aspx? /main.php?sec= [PT]

so if the request is for "foo.asp" or "foo.aspx", the URL will be rewritten as "main.php?sec=foo". And this works exactly as expected on their server.

I tried to set something similar up on my (Debian — with Apache 2.0.something, not quite exactly the same as my web host) laptop, putting those lines in a .htaccess file in my public_html directory. But when I ask for "http://localhost/~lucy/foo.asp", it’s actually looking for a file named foo.asp, not rewriting it. (I checked, by creating a file called foo.asp.)

I checked my configuration, and both mod_userdir and mod_rewrite are enabled, but it stubbornly refuses to work.

What’s wrong?

(NB. I had to email my bit of config snippet to one of the techies at the hosting co. for them to install it. Could they have spootted a mistake and fixed it without telling me?)
** EDIT ** I am using mod_userdir on the laptop, which is set so that requests for any user’s directory come from a folder called "public_html" within their home directory. My home directory is /home/lucy, so ~lucy means /home/lucy/public_html as far as Apache is concerned.

The ^ ("hat") symbol means "beginning", but in my case the bit of URL that I’m matching isn’t at the beginning, cos of the userdir prefix. I’m trying to rewrite "~lucy/foo.asp" as "~lucy/index.php?sec=foo".

And yes, I did do a proper apache2ctl restart, not just apache2ctl graceful.

is a server the same as just web hosting?
like can I just upload my app to a web hosting company or is server hosting different?

Hi, I want to start the web hosting company. I understand that I need to purchase one server machine (planned to purchase from IBM), web server and database server (will purchase from Microsoft), anti-virus.
But I also come to know that there are lot of risks involved like hacking, server crashing and so on.
But i don’t know exactly which are all the risks? Also what will be the approximate cost to start such a website?

How can all IT companies get away with billing customers in advance? When our company starts vendors relationships with companies such as Loews, Staples, ULINE, PG&E, AT&T, etc. we are billed monthly with a small setup fee. Could you imagine if your phone company asked for one year worth of fees up front before even considering you as a customer? When is an entrepreneur going to open up a real web hosting company that treats customers right with net 30 terms and helps them by reporting to D&B??? Another example of IT and Finance NOT getting along… Isn’t the goal to help the customer anyway???
