I open a PHP file with FF and its content is printed!

I’m making a website and need to know if I can just load a webpage i created to a domain name I purchase. Is it absolute certain that i need a web host?

I just wanna know why, why does registering a domain name ( .com, .net etc ) cost like 60 bucks a year ( USD41.67 )?

And about their web host it cost like a month and they give very limited bandwidth and web space, the worst of it some even wants you to pay like bucks for PHP and additional for 1 sql database?

I am going to start two websites very soon. My web host offers two domains so does this mean I can have two websites with one plan? Also should I chose Linux hosting or Microsoft hosting? I will use PHP and Java in both of my websites. And I am choosing 1&1 if it makes a difference.

How do I create a virtual host name for an IP address like xaviersobroso.com or something else. I have a static IP, XAMPP web host which has Apache, Mysql, FileZilla, and Mercury. I want it to be like an actual domain, not a subdomain.

I want to create a professional looking website for my restaurant and not really sure how to go about it.
I used a IT company before and they have done all the hard work for me (create a website, provided with domain and email) Problems started when I asked them to update few bits and bobs not only I had to spend considerable amount of time to explain why I want the website to be updated, pay additional money for few photos to be added but also sketch the whole thing for them and still the ‘updated’ product did not meet my requirements.
I was hoping that you could recommend me some software (preferably with free trial) that would allow me to build a commercial website.
Something that would be fairly easy to use, will allow me to make changes to the website at any time also could you please recommend any web host’s that would allow me to yet again buy domain and email?

Hi, I tried to read about databases, but I didn’t find it much help. How can a server like Apache(running on your computer) still work when you shutdown? Can other computers still recieve that information when your server/computer is shutdown? Would the database work? Would I need to buy a server dedicated to that? or contact web host that sells server space? is that the better option?

Woah, that is a lot of questions. I guess I’ll need to read a whole lot more about databases. I just usually give up because I don’t understand how a database can still work if the server is down, especially if the server is running on my computer. Maybe I got it wrong and they just install Apache to test if the database works. Please help!

My friend’s website designer is nowhere to be found since June last year. He’s the same guy who referred them to a wieb host. Unfortunately this guy wasn’t able to turn over the name of the web host name and contact details, and the username and password.

So I have been trying to find a decent web host, that offers

and the ability of not having to transfer my domain to them, all I really want is a web host with those, that I can take my domain, and point my name servers to. But everything I have found either is missing what I need, or is 80+ dollars yearly, and if I had a huge website that would be fine, but I really make no money off the site, so If anyone has any good hosts, I look forewad to hearing about them!

So I want to attempt to build my own blog via HTML as a summer project. The goal is to blog about my experience as I build the site, allowing people who follow the blog (if any do) to see what’s happening with the site while reading how I did it. My only problem is I can’t find a good web host for this site. Any suggestions?

My web hosting company supports mod_rewrite. I tried using this snippet:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule /([a-z0-9_-]*)\.aspx? /main.php?sec= [PT]

so if the request is for "foo.asp" or "foo.aspx", the URL will be rewritten as "main.php?sec=foo". And this works exactly as expected on their server.

I tried to set something similar up on my (Debian — with Apache 2.0.something, not quite exactly the same as my web host) laptop, putting those lines in a .htaccess file in my public_html directory. But when I ask for "http://localhost/~lucy/foo.asp", it’s actually looking for a file named foo.asp, not rewriting it. (I checked, by creating a file called foo.asp.)

I checked my configuration, and both mod_userdir and mod_rewrite are enabled, but it stubbornly refuses to work.

What’s wrong?

(NB. I had to email my bit of config snippet to one of the techies at the hosting co. for them to install it. Could they have spootted a mistake and fixed it without telling me?)
** EDIT ** I am using mod_userdir on the laptop, which is set so that requests for any user’s directory come from a folder called "public_html" within their home directory. My home directory is /home/lucy, so ~lucy means /home/lucy/public_html as far as Apache is concerned.

The ^ ("hat") symbol means "beginning", but in my case the bit of URL that I’m matching isn’t at the beginning, cos of the userdir prefix. I’m trying to rewrite "~lucy/foo.asp" as "~lucy/index.php?sec=foo".

And yes, I did do a proper apache2ctl restart, not just apache2ctl graceful.

I have time Warner Cable (7mgs). What benefit would a Web Host, such as Yola be to me.If I wanted to use php, CG I, JavaScript or to get recognized sooner by a major Browser? Is it really worth the extra money–I don’t have a business right now, I’m just trying to learn HTML (which i’m going to do if it kills me) and how to build a website.

I would like to know witch web host is good for 10.000 visits a day, for 100.000 visits a day etc.
The webhosting services I found do not post this informtion and I do not know how to calculate because no webhost actualy displays this information …
