I feel a little more confused now and that my question before wasn’t very specific or correct to what my problem is. At the moment I have this "would be" web application sitting on my local host. Yes this has apache installed and that I could run it on this. But I don’t want to. I’d rather run it on my web server which I access usually via ftp client. When I upload the site to the internet and attempt to register. I will lose connection with MySQL because the database still remains on my localhost. In my mysqli_connect.php document I have the DB_HOST as ‘localhost’ do I need to change this or any other settings for it to work like a regular web app on its own. Like I’ve said I may not have enough knowledge of PHP and I’m totally missing the point.
The app at the moment is:

I am working on setting up a development laptop for PHP. My goal is the well-used Server/PHP/SQL combination. The laptop I am trying to equip is running Windows 7 Home 64-bit.
I have spent the last 9 hours trying to make something …Anything… WORK.
I will be putting any finished website pages on a regularly hosted server - so I’m not really concerned with the details of a development pc setup - as long as it works! I don’t care whether it is a pre-packaged installation or manual installation. I don’t even care if it’s IIS or Apache.
I tried first installing the Apache 2.2 web server. When I was done, I was able to open a browser and get the "It Worked!" message from a successful install. Then I tried to add PHP 5 to the mix and read LOTS of instructional sites online.
A.) At some point you typically need to rename "php.ini-development" to "php.ini"
B.) then change some lines inside the file to configure it.
C.) Then you are supposed to copy a file from the php .zip "install package" to your windows directory.
I think these are old instructions that do not apply to the current version of PHP 5 and Windows 7.
So I got sick of trying with Apache and tried the Windows IIS7 approach. First, I used the Microsoft Web Platform Installer 2.0 which is supposed to be "Automatic". I added the PHP option during the install, but none of my test .php pages will parse correctly when opened with a browser. They either come up showing the source php code or they show nothing at all.
Then I tried the xampp installer - which is outdated - but supposedly still works. = "http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html"
No luck with that. Then I tried the pre-packaged installer at SorceForge.net = "http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad/files/". No luck with that either.
I imagine I have cluttered the system up with so many different approaches. Maybe they are counter-acting each other.
1.) If there are files that need to be cleaned/uninstalled before putting together a Server/PHP/SQL setup - which files are they? I will clean/uninstall them.
2.) This laptop started off clean. I’d like to get it back to that point and start off on the correct foot. The directions just need to be CLEAR and UP TO DATE WITH WINDOWS 7. I’m not picky but it has to work.
I am an intermediate computer user.
Thank you much

I know how to do HTML coding, but I have a few questions before I try to publish a web site.
First, What is the "hosting" that i keep reading about on how-to internet sites?
Also, is there any way that I can create a website that belongs to ME (no commercial site tied to it) for absolutely no monetary exchange whatsoever?
*** F Y I — the site I intend to create will be an archive for unpublished stories of mine and of others. This means that there will have to be a membership/login/"my account" type thing. any ideas on how to do that?
links would be helpful, but I intend to give best answer to the person who explains it in great detail in his/her own words.
Thanks so much for you help!
also, help me come up with a creative name: my name is molly, it’s gonna be an archive of stories, and usually i can come up with creative names but this one just has me stumped. Help!
to sparkles: I already have that.
Guys: I WANT A MULTI-PAGE WEBSITE WHERE IT LINKS TO OTHER PAGES AND HAS A LOG-IN AND EVERYTHING!!!

What/Where the best "DEAL" hosting firm on the net for RENEWAL of both of my domain names’ registeration, and hosting of website (for 5 years term). It has to be a reliable/good hosting company. Thank you.
Since my ‘mini’ website is just 3 pages in total (as I say it is personal…may enlarge it later), I just came across an offer by VERIO of .95/year inclusive of domain name registeration/hosting (for 3 page websites)! Five years = only!! Isn’t this good deal on Verio OR not!
I have an Advertising and Graphic Design company (for the past 16 years). I have recently moved to Naples (on the Gulf Coast in the south west of Florida). I have also lost my url artistatlg to a tatoo artist (long story). So I need to rename my company….

I have these killer Ideas and great names already to start my own company. BUT I don’t know were to start I see that there is a lot of competences to start a company like GoDaddy which is a domain and hosting company. Now the Market share for the company is very big to make my company successful and for my first company i don"t think i should go into the domain registration industry. Then I would like to take a lot market share to Value Click the Advertising network I want to compete with them and make my company a good brand till they decide to maybe buy us to take us out of business.
What company is better to start and should be a great shot in the heart for market share?
I need a free webhost that supports image maps…i.e. one that has the Apache mod_imap module installed. I’ve been Googling the last couple of days, but none of the free web hosts I found allow image maps! I want an image map, so I can have a cool forums sig, which will have different links in different parts of the pic.
Can anyone please help?
Thanks in advance.
Thanks Ron, but actually, I am not referring to HTML in this case. I am actually trying to use BBCode, and to do so, I have to have a .map file which contains the coordinates of the image I am trying to create an image map of. All free web hosts that I have found so far allow uploading of this .map file, but do not have the "Apache mod_imap module" installed on their servers. You can Google that term to see what I’m talking about. Consequently, though I can link to both the image file, and map file, the script will NOT work because that module is not installed.
Actually…nevermind Googling it.
Here’s the link which describes it:
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/mod/mod_imap.html
So all I need is a free web host that has that module installed on their servers.
I tried 000webhost, but they don’t have the Apache mod_imap module installed on their servers…or at least responded negatively when I asked for support, telling me basically that they don’t offer any help for creating scripts…and that was after I CLEARLY told them that all I needed was the direct URL to an uploaded .map file, stupid people. So no, that free web host sucks too.
I remember once i had a web server app that allowed me to create a domain name w/o having to pay/register it. and it did work.
I am now thinking of setting up a mail and web server using a linux system. Now when i set up linux it asks me to create a domain name. now if i pick a name like www.myname.com will it host my site? I will be using Apache Web Server Project.
And if i do get it to work, are there laws about this? I know i can server a site using my IP address but i think i can make up a domain name also. like i said i did it once a long time ago, using a Macintosh.
Also if i do git it to work do i have to use the "www." and the last part can it be more than 3 cariters?? for example:
<< "www.my_domaine.madman/", and can i replace the www??
ok, like i said i did get i to work a long time ago.and to top it off i had a dial up connection..
Why did it work then, and why wont it work again now, and i have a broad band connection
1 I started learning HTML (awesome and pretty easy to get started)
2 then after two years I found that css is the newer way to go (easier to have a single style on multiple pages at once, no table-based).
3 then, this summer I learned that there is PHP. I felt that this will make things even better because I can use this instead of iframes (which is old) and even read/edit text files.
For the past few weeks I used php on a web hosting site but it gets really annoying having to upload every time I change code. But whenever I look around the web about php, I see advices about installing Apache too. I went to Apache website but I didn’t understand all the geek-words. I don’t want to make my computer a server. I just want to use php on my windows xp. How? Will installing php from the php website just do it? I don’t want to unintentionally open my computer to the world and/or have problems/viruses/extreme-slow-down on my computer.
Rather than just get everything with xampp, will installing just php do it?
…or actually xampp might be good since i found that "Officially, XAMPP’s designers intended it for use only as a development tool, to allow website designers and programmers to test their work on their own computers without any access to the Internet"

I need to post some questions about hosting ASP .Net sites with hosting services. I’m interested in resource allocation, app pools, how hosting services deal with multiple sites on the same server, etc. Where is a good place to post my questions? Is there a usenet group or a forum that is active and frequented by hosting service experts?
Please don’t Google "web hosting" and post your results here. I will report you to the YahooAnswer deities.
Specifics.
Like, i hate the fact that Palin went to a church that wants to convert gays to heterosexuals. But i also dont like Obama’s church situation, which the "Godamn America" and whatnot. Plus, i was annoyed that he didnt want to wear the american flag pin or something?
What do you think?
