I feel a little more confused now and that my question before wasn’t very specific or correct to what my problem is. At the moment I have this "would be" web application sitting on my local host. Yes this has apache installed and that I could run it on this. But I don’t want to. I’d rather run it on my web server which I access usually via ftp client. When I upload the site to the internet and attempt to register. I will lose connection with MySQL because the database still remains on my localhost. In my mysqli_connect.php document I have the DB_HOST as ‘localhost’ do I need to change this or any other settings for it to work like a regular web app on its own. Like I’ve said I may not have enough knowledge of PHP and I’m totally missing the point.

Hi I have a Thomson speed touch 530 router I am with big pond I am wondering how do I get my web server to work and the easiest way to do it I have a genuine windows 2008 server a play with it but didn’t have much luck I do get my website on the server when I type local host or my privet ip address in internet explorer also I have tried apache and home web server and xampp but I get the same result thanks

Im trying to get started hosting my "own" web site, not off someone elses like lunarpages or godaddy. I have registered my domain name, but how do I upload files to it. Is this what apache is for? Like if I tell apache my domain is www.mydomain.com, will it act as a server for that domain and let me upload files to it? Right now I have it set to localhost as the domain name so I could test it out on my own computer. Is this what apache is for or am i mistaken? Thanks for the help

My web host generates an apache access.log file but they want me to pay extra to use their web-based log analysis tool. Does anyone know of a good php-based tool that I can drop into my web host account that will parse the access.log and give me a nice summary page, preferably with graphs and charts?
Note: It must be php-based, as that’s the only thing that my web host will let me use. Yes, of course, I can use a client-side tool that requires me to download the log files, but I was hoping for something that I could view from anywhere.

I need the ‘pc’ for web hosting (ie: my own webserver where I can host my sites using apache, php, mysql etc).
I need the pc to be able to run 24/7 with little or no noise. I need it to be small, preferably as small as possible (without compromising on heat dissipation though). The pc does not need to be powerful, entry level of slightly higher would do. A generous harddisk would be a bonus.

Im looking for a web server that is capable of running ASP.NET v1.1 and 2.0 web apps. On my Win XP 64-bit box i only have a scaled back IIS6. Im really after virtual hosting so that i can host multiple web sites from the server instead of this virtual directory nonsense.
So far im eyeing Abyss X2 Pro v2.3+, the only working commercial solution i could find, but would like to find a free solution if possible. I’ve heard of Apache’s ability to run ASP.NET. Can you tell me is Apache as effective at serving up ASP.NET 1.1/2.0 web apps as IIS6?
Hi, I tried to read about databases, but I didn’t find it much help. How can a server like Apache(running on your computer) still work when you shutdown? Can other computers still recieve that information when your server/computer is shutdown? Would the database work? Would I need to buy a server dedicated to that? or contact web host that sells server space? is that the better option?
Woah, that is a lot of questions. I guess I’ll need to read a whole lot more about databases. I just usually give up because I don’t understand how a database can still work if the server is down, especially if the server is running on my computer. Maybe I got it wrong and they just install Apache to test if the database works. Please help!

I have my own computer with PHP, MySQL, Apache, Filezilla, and Mercury installed and it works fine. I already have a website at a remote hosting site and it works great except it is a shared server and often very slow. I wanted to move all of my website that uses PHP, MySQL and Apache to my own computer because 1 I get a ton more space, 2 I barely use it, and 3 there is a local computer store in town that I think would be able to provide the internet and DNS-stuff for my computer. I want to know what the requirements are. I have Windows XP, 256 MB of RAM, 1 55 GB and 1 8 GB harddrive, and 1.3 GHz (i think). I mainly want to put it on my computer because I can do anything with it, including mail which i couldn’t use with the other and plenty of other things.
Edit: The harddrives are actually (one) 55 GB hard drive and (one) 8 GB hard drive, with a total of 63 GB. I think I have an extra 128 MB or RAM, or maybe even 256 MB, so I think I’m ok or close in that area. I am not hosting the server at my house, there is a PC store and I am probably going to have my server there with them providing the Internet. I know Linux is better, and I am probably going to get their help in installing Linux soon.

I need to write a web service and am undecided as to whether I should use Perl or ASP.NET with Mono (Java is out of the running altogether). My biggest concern is compatibility; I don’t know what kind of hosting the customer is willing to dish out for yet, so I want it to be able to run (with minimal modifications) on IIS or Apache. How good is Apache’s mod_mono in terms of speed and reliability? Is implementing Perl’s SOAP::Transport::HTTP::Apache module a nightmare? Is Perl going to cause trouble if the service’s consumer is a C# program running on Windows? I’ll give points to the most detailed answer, not the timeliest one.
