is maintaining a VPS or dedicated server hard?
I’m wondering this because I have a growing web hosting company and I need to buy my own VPS or dedicated sever. Are they hard to maintain? What do you have to do with them? Where can I buy cheapish ones?

I would suggest not using your own server, but just use one of your hosting company’s servers as a dedicated server, that way hardware problems will be handled for you and it will reduce the cost substantially. Not to mention they’ll pre-load and give basic support for most of the software you need. Only if you’re really messing around with the computer does it get complicated. I wouldn’t be surprised if you get a web based control panel that simplifies all or at least most of the admin. You’ll probably only ever need to ask the odd question here or there which you would get the best responses from on an appropriate forum e.g. server maintenance. You should be able to get a dedicated server from about $35 a month, you need to look around and find a deal right for you. If you’re not sure if you need a VPS or a dedicated server, why not try the VPS first since it’ll be substantially cheaper still? It might also give you a feel for what a dedicated server would be like to manage.
