How do you do web-hosting for your own website?
I, Desai want to create my own website, but I’m confused when it come to web-hosting. In order to reduce cost, I want to do web-hosting on my own. However I have no clue where to start from in ununtu 10.4 server edition computer.
After the web-hosting is done, then I want to know if it is possible for me to create my own custom email address. for example my website is www.example.com and i want to have my email address to be desai@example.com How, do i do that or is that possible?
I might switch the web-hosting to Mac OS X Snow Leopard, if you think that will be easy. Please do guide me.

If you are going to run your own webserver I would suggest using debain, gentoo, slackware, etc.. ubuntu is way to bloated to use as a webserver..
You will need to install Apache Web Server.. MySQL.. and PHP.. those are most likely what you will need to be using..
If you want email as well.. you will need to install sendmail and qpopper…
You will also probably want FTP access.. so you will want to install proftpd as well
If you want low cost I would suggest buying a webhost.. $3.45/mo. which gives you all your webhosting needs, email needs, and a domain name…
If you run your own server.. you will need a domain name $10/yr
You will need decent bandwidth $60/mo
and the server will be running 24/7.. which uses electricity .. most servers have around a 550watt power supply.. which 550 x 24 x 365.25 / 1000 / 12 x .1 = $40.18/mo in electricity costs..
so total cost to run your own server is.. ((60 + 40.18) x 12) + 10 / 12 = 101.01/mo.
if you already have decent enough bandwidth.. that’s still ((40.18 x 12) + 10) / 12 = $41.01/mo.
You need to go opensource is you want to save money. Best recommendation is LAMP (linux, apache, mysql, php). However, you will also need a computer that is on 24/7 with a dedicated IP. Also, need high quality bandwidth provider that can handle the upload. I know it sounds good to just host website at home but you will encounter issues if you website gains popularity and also you will end up paying extra for electricity bills, dedicated ips, higher upload speeds. That’s why it’s recommended to just go with a web hosting provider like Chime Host - http://www.chimehost.com/web-hosting because they offer high quality bandwidth that can handle traffic, quality servers that can stay online for 24/7 and a low price which is affordable.
You have to use Apache to host your webserver using Linux. It’s simple to setup if you know what your doing. But it sounds like you don’t.
If you google: "setup apache webserver" you will fine many step by step instructions on how to set it up. You still have to register for a Domain name from a place liek GoDaddy.com, unless your just going to use an IP address instead of a URL.
Good Luck
Actually it’s a lot more expensive to host it yourself than to pay for hosting.
You would have to upgrade your upload speeds and that upgrade alone costs more than $5/month (what a professional hosting would cost). It would still be a 100 to 1000 times slower since real hosts now days have multiple gigabit links and you would have a couple megabits at best.
You would still have to pay for a domain name registration (about $10/year).
P.S. Plus the time and effort you would have to spend to set everything up.
